Ability of Cats

Kitty's ability? Are they what others say?

Most of you heard cat's have nine lives, land the right way up and so on. But are all of these statements true? Just a little discussion/info for all of you to look.

The Abilities Mentioned
1. Night-vision / Seeing in the dark!
It is true that the cats' eyes are able to adapt to the dark and can see much better than the human eye in the dark. However, they could not see in total darkness. If there's a little light, they are able to see. Perhaps not as clear as during the day, cats can predict their obstacles very well and look as if they can see everything in darkness.

2. Landing on their feet on every fall.
The reason how cats can angle themselves on falls are because they do not have a collarbone. Their backbones are more mobile than other animals. This is called the righting reflex, which already begins to appear when cats are at 3-4 weeks of age. However, if the cat were to fall from a larger height like 2 storeys or more, their legs could no longer absorb all the shock and will injure themselves.

3. Intelligence.
Cats are said to have intelligence. They are able to make use of what they learn and apply it in their own situations. If you teach a cat how to move a box, they might move the box in order to climb on and reach a higher area. Cats also have a better memory than dogs or even monkeys.

4. Curiousity.
Cats by nature are curious. They are able to observe and learn the things that humans do.

So kitty-lovers, if you ever own a cat, cats are very great at stuff. Although they have this "attitude" and "king-of-the-house" personality, they're very agile, smart and cute creatures. Their ingenious abilities have always been able to amaze their owners. You just have to hope that your cat isn't like Garfield!

It would be nice if we could cut dingbat fonts without any intervention in inkscape, but usually I want them to be more than one color, or there are problems in the outlines, or double lines and they must be cleaned up. Here are some from the XmasTyme font that I cleaned up and made ready for cutting.

More Christmas Cutouts

Sorry, they are all in one file. You will have to extract out the ones you need. It is too much work to put each one in its own file and come up with an name. Besides you will probably cut more than one at once, I wouldn't know which ones.

Tis the Season

Sales of Crown, Avempartha, and Nyphron have been impressively brisk as of late. Crown sales reached an all time high this weekend. I’d like to think it is because the books are finally reaching critical mass through word-of-mouth, but this was also the weekend of Black Friday, the day retail stores enter black numbers on their ledgers. So maybe the sales are just the result of holiday shoppers, but even so, compared to last year, Crown is rocking.

The arcane enigma that is the Amazon sale rank—the subject of great study and dubious speculation—is far from an accurate reflection of number-of-units-sold, but the contrast at least is striking. The lower the number the better and last year about this time I was excited if my sales rank was below 500,000. I reasoned that since ranks run into the millions, this was respectable. After all, at that time I was an unknown author with one book.

Now I am an unknown author with three books so being under say, 200,000 would be great. Only I’m not under two hundred thousand. The sales rank of Crown has been fairly consistent hovering around the 20,000 mark with an all time low of 14,000. That might mean I am only selling 50 books a week, (that seems like a lot—but it really isn’t. Bestsellers move between 1000 and 10,000 a day.) When you factor in that, I make a buck or two a book that means I make a gross profit of only a couple thousand a year from which I subtract promotion costs for bookmarks, posters, etc. This leaves me in the hole overall, but I’m not complaining because the contrast between last year and this, is impressive. Regardless of how many actual books sell (a number I can never obtain but can only guess at,) it is clear that the situation has improved dramatically. People are buying the books in record numbers.

As I said however, this might all be a month-long blip due to holiday shoppers, but last year’s shoppers were not nearly so merry about the little gold book named The Crown Conspiracy. It is possible that hordes of impatient people were waiting for three books to hit the shelves before starting the series. If I remember correctly, I started reading Harry Potter the year the third book was released, but that was only coincidence. It is also possible that people are spreading the word, and sharing the books—virally infecting the reading public with news about Riyria.

Whatever it is, tis the season to be jolly.

Peace on Earth

Card for Allison

This is the hardest card I have ever had to make. It is for my sister in law. Her husband died suddenly this morning of a heart attack. We are all still in shock. It is hard to make a card than conveys what I really feel. I feel sad, I feel sorry that she is going through this hard time. So hard to make a card say that. I chose the sentiment because it made me think that death is so sad for us, but for the loved one who has gone to be with the Lord, who is in the Master's hands is happy. It is just our perspective of the same event. My sister in law sent my husband a rather poignant poem last night. He didn't open it then, because he is really bad about opening e-mails that aren't work related. He did read it this morning and it made both of us cry. It was a poem called Slow Dance. According to the e-mail, it was a poem written by a teenager with terminal cancer. Her dying wish... she wanted to remind everyone to live their life to the fullest.
Slow Dance
Have you ever watched kids
on a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain
Slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erractic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?
You better slow down,
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.
Do you run through each day
On the fly?
When you ask "How are you?"
Do you hear the reply?
When the day is done
do you lie in your bed
with the next hudred chores
running through your head?
You better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short;
The music won't last.
Ever told your child,
"We'll do it tomorrow?"
And in your haste,
not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch,
Let a good friendship die
Cause you never had time
to call and say "Hi"?
You better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short
The music won't last.
When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift...
Thrown away.
Live is not a race.
Do take it slower.
Hear the music
Before the song is over.
Go tell the people that you love that you love them. Be truly thankful for the time God gives us with them. I hope you have a good Thanksgiving Day.

Scalloped Circle Layered Rose Tutorial

I punched out 10 scalloped circles out of several different shades of pink.
I placed the circles so that the different colors alternated.

I then brought all the circles together and made a stack.

I used a compass point to pierce through the entire stack.

I placed a brad in the center to hold the stack together.

I scrunched up the top circle.

Here is what the flower looks like to start.

Then I continued scrunching, one layer at a time

The finished product. I used my fingers to fluff it up a little.

Paper roses

I made these two paper roses cards. The roses were made using a scalloped circle punch. The pink rose card was for the color challenge, and the peach colored roses were for the teapot challenge.

Stampin' Sisters in Christ Challenge #14

The Stampin' Sisters in Christ Challenge #14 was from
Galatians 6:9
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
We were to make a thanksgiving card. The story behind this card starts with the cornicopia sticker. On Sunday we had a thanksgiving fellowship meal at church. Our senior pastor's wife worked so hard getting everything ready. She had everything thing decorated so nicely. She had these stickers on the placemats. When my kids saw them, they all looked at me and said that they knew that I was going to make a card out of them. When I read the inspiration verse, it made me think of my kids. I was very proud of them on Sunday, because when all the other teenagers ate the food and then went to play, my 3 oldest kids were in the kitchen washing dishes. In past years the ones washing the dishes have been the elderly ladies at the church. I talked with my kids in the morning about how it wasn't right that the older ladies to have to do the work. Our pastor's wife in particular has been having a hard time with pain in her knees. I was proud that they helped. I hope that they will continue to DO GOOD. After the meal, when we were all cleaning up, I went around and rescued the stickers before the placemats went into the trash. I plan on giving this repurposed card to my pastor's wife to thank her for all the hard work she did getting the meal together.

2 more long and tall cards

Two more long and tall cards for the limited supplies challenge.

New Moon

I made this for two challenges, the Stampin' B challenge to make a card with red, black and white and a moon on it. It was also for the limited supply challenge to make a long tall card. I gave this card to my daughter. She used it as a thank you card. Her friend took her to see the movie New Moon.
